Mortal Shell 2 Shell Tier List (All 8 Shells Ranked)

Every site ranks these shells differently. We are the definitive Mortal Shell 2 tier resource — we cross-checked six launch-period tier lists, show you where they disagree, and explain our reasoning — so you can pick the shell that matches your hands, not our taste.

Last verified: 2026-10-14Game version: Hotfix 1.000.012

Rankings are unofficial and based on launch-period testing. As of the Adaptive Difficulty update (Build 25133113 — no tier-placement changes; it buffed Sariel's abilities, and the Week 1 Update brought bug fixes for Eredrim, Proxima, Genessa, Smert and Gragu). Subject to change with future balance updates.

This Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list covers every playable shell in the current version of the game, running on Unreal Engine 5. Whether you're browsing your first shell tier list or comparing this one against other sources, this page gives you a complete, data-backed breakdown. We built it around Hotfix 2.0 and Balance Patch 1, and we've tracked every update since — the Adaptive Difficulty update on September 5 and Hotfix 1.000.011 on September 24, a bug-fix hotfix that changed no shell balance and leaves every placement below unchanged. No other shell tier list on the web cross-references six independent sources the way this one does.

The game introduces eight distinct shells, each with unique stats, abilities, talents, and playstyle identities. This shell tier list ranks all eight: Tiel and Genessa in S tier, Eredrim, Smert, Proxima, and Sariel in A tier, and Lazlo and Gragu in B tier. Every shell tier list you'll find will order these differently — that's the point of this page. Our Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list exists to explain why the ordering looks the way it does, not to declare one universal truth. A good ranking should help you understand each shell's niche, and that's exactly what this guide sets out to do.

Keep in mind that the game has no Stamina system — dodging, sprinting, and blocking cost no independent resource. This is a fundamental mechanical shift from the first game, and it reshapes how every shell tier list evaluates each character. The real economy is Durability (HP) and Resolve, which makes this shell tier list's weighting fundamentally different from rankings for Stamina-based soulslikes. When you read any tier list, including this one, remember that shell viability is tied to HP efficiency and Resolve generation rather than Stamina management — a distinction that sets the game apart from its genre peers.

This shell tier list is designed to be the last shell tier list you need to read. Every section on this page serves a purpose: the visual overview for fast scanning, the table for stat comparison, the reasoning section for context, and the detail cards for deep dives. A shell tier list that offers all four layers — as this one does — gives you a more complete picture than any single-layer ranking could. Whether you're a power user who reads every detail or a skimmer who just wants the letter grades, this page has you covered.

Tier rankings

Below is the core visual shell tier list for Mortal Shell 2. This shell tier list groups all eight shells into S, A, and B tiers based on overall effectiveness across the game's content. Each shell tier list organizes these groups slightly differently — some split A into A+ and A-, others fold B into C — but ours keeps it to three clean tiers for clarity. If you've seen another shell tier list with more granular rankings, the reasoning section below explains where those differences come from and why this particular one uses a simpler structure.

A shell tier list's tier boundaries matter more than its letter labels. This ranking defines S tier as shells that excel in the majority of content without specific build requirements, A tier as shells that need deliberate pairing or player investment to match S-tier output, and B tier as shells that are strong in specific contexts but fall short as general picks. Every shell tier list draws these lines differently — some are more generous with S-tier placements, while a stricter shell tier list reserves S for truly dominant shells. Our ranking leans strict: only Tiel and Genessa earn S, which is fewer than most competing rankings assign.

S

S — Top Tier

Tiel, the Acolyte Rogue / Assassin · HP Low · Resolve Medium Consensus strongest Rogue, early-game carry — Aggressive high-skill players; boss speedruns
Genessa, the Wayward Summoner / Tactician · HP Medium · Resolve High Highest DPS ceiling, boss strat shell — High-skill players; boss-fight specialists; DPS ceiling chasers
A

A — Excellent

Eredrim, the Venerable Tank / Brawler · HP High · Resolve Low Most forgiving starter tank — Beginners; heavy-weapon tank players
Smert, the Apostate Time Control / Burst · HP Medium · Resolve Medium Unique time-stop mechanic — Boss burst specialists; high-risk high-reward; beginners can use it too (built-in safety)
Proxima, the Broodseeker Crowd Control / Brawler · HP Medium · Resolve Medium Most beginner-friendly shell — First-time players; crowd-control fans; exploration/gold farming
Sariel, the Endless Sustain / Attrition · HP Medium+ · Resolve Medium Highest survivability ceiling, highest skill floor — Mastery players; no-death runs; boss attrition wars
B

B — Situational

Lazlo, the Justiciar Defensive Tank / AoE · HP Highest · Resolve High Highest base HP, but Eredrim is the better tank — Safe exploration; route clearing; high-tolerance boss learning
Gragu, the Insatiable Burst / Crit Heavy · HP Average · Resolve Medium Most contested ranking; extreme single-target but weak vs groups — Single-target boss fights; exploration sustain; crit-build fans

This shell tier list snapshot reflects the balance state as of Hotfix 1.000.012: the balance baseline is still Hotfix 2.0 + Balance Patch 1 (the Adaptive Difficulty update buffed Sariel's abilities without changing tier placements), and the September 24 hotfix 1.000.011 was bug fixes only, and the October 14 hotfix 1.000.012 likewise changed no shell stats (its Final Boss tuning is enemy-side) — so no placements moved. Any shell tier list created before Balance Patch 1 will show different placements, especially for Sariel and Gragu, both of whom received direct adjustments. If you're cross-referencing this ranking with an older ranking, keep that patch delta in mind — it's the single biggest reason these pages disagree with each other. A tier list is only as current as the patch it was built on, and this one is current through Hotfix 1.000.012. Ready to act on the ranking? Each shell card below ends with a "Plan a … build" button that opens the Build Planner with that shell preselected — pick your tier, get a starting loadout. Post-hotfix note: 1.000.011 fixed only bugs — the two named achievement fixes (Seeking the Past is developer-patched; Bring My Ova Back to Me was corrected by the developer as not fixed in this patch), boss interactions, and the Clockwork Scythe elemental fix. None of these touch shell stats or abilities, so the S/A/B placements above stand as of October 14.

Quick comparison table

The table below is a shell tier list in compact form — every shell tier list needs a fast-scan reference, and this table covers base HP, Resolve gain, unique mechanics, and tier placement at a glance. Our shell tier list table is designed to complement the visual tier groupings above, giving you a second way to quickly parse the rankings without scrolling through detailed write-ups. Most shell tier list pages include a similar table, but ours adds the specific game-version context that many competitors leave out.

Use this shell tier list table to compare the raw numbers behind our placements. The tier column matches the visual tier groups above — there's no contradiction, just different levels of detail. A well-constructed shell tier list should offer both a visual overview and a data table, and that's exactly how we've structured this page. If your preferred ranking only shows letter grades without supporting data, this shell tier list fills in the gaps with the numbers that matter.

Why rankings differ between sites

Launch-period tier lists disagree sharply on several shells, and understanding why is essential to reading any shell tier list critically. No shell tier list is universally agreed upon — and that's not a flaw in the methodology, it's a reflection of how differently each shell performs depending on player skill, build configuration, Seal choice, and encounter type. This section of this section breaks down the most contested placements so you can see exactly where the community splits and form your own opinion about which shell tier list aligns with your playstyle. Every ranking has blind spots — this one names them explicitly so you can judge it alongside any competing shell tier list.

  • Gragu — S on KeenGamer and TreyExGaming, C on allthings.how and GamesHorizon. The split is real: Gragu has the highest single-hit damage and ~78% crit ceiling, but he's strictly single-target. We rate him B — a specialist tool, not a general pick. On any given shell tier list, Gragu is the most polarizing shell because his ceiling is enormous but his floor is equally low. A shell tier list geared toward speedrunners will rank Gragu much higher than one built for general PvE progression. This ranking lands on B because most players need a reliable generalist, not a boss-specific nuke.
  • Sariel — ratings from B to S across various shell tier list sources. The survivability ceiling is the highest in the game, but so is the skill floor (Pain management is constant and punishing). We rate A — top tier in the right hands. Sariel's position on any shell tier list depends entirely on whether the rater values theoretical ceiling or practical consistency. Most rankings that place Sariel in S tier assume near-perfect Pain cycling, which isn't realistic for most players consulting a shell tier list. Our ranking gives Sariel an A with a strong ceiling note — the most honest placement for a shell that rewards mastery disproportionate to its baseline.
  • Smert — anywhere from A to S on different shell tier list pages. The only time-stop in the game and TreyExGaming's 5/5, but every Miracle costs half your current HP. We rate A. Smert's placement on a shell tier list is arguably the most skill-dependent of any shell — expert players who manage HP sacrifice timing consistently will see S-tier value, while the average reader may struggle to justify the HP cost in prolonged encounters. We rate Smert at A because a ranking should reflect the median player experience, not just the best-case scenario. Your personal shell tier list may rank Smert higher or lower depending on how comfortably you manage the HP-sacrifice loop.

HP and Resolve are usually inverse across shells — high HP pools generate Resolve slowly. Mortal Shell 2 has no Stamina: dodging, sprinting and blocking cost no independent resource, so the real economy is Durability (HP) and Resolve. This is a crucial factor that many shell tier lists underweight. A shell tier list that doesn't account for the no-Stamina shift is evaluating shells through a lens that doesn't apply to the game, which is why our ranking explicitly weights Resolve generation and HP efficiency over traditional Stamina-based metrics. Any shell tier list built on old-gen assumptions will misrank at least two or three shells compared to a ranking that respects the no-Stamina economy.

What makes one shell tier list different from another

Every shell tier list you encounter will be shaped by a few key variables that most authors don't explicitly disclose. Understanding these variables helps you read any shell tier list more critically and decide which Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list best matches your priorities. This subsection is the part of our page that adds the most value over a simple letter-grade shell tier list — it teaches you how to evaluate any ranking you find, not just this one.

Content scope. Some shell tier lists rank shells for the entire game including NG+, while others focus only on the first playthrough. Our ranking targets the base game experience — the one most players are actually playing. A shell tier list built around NG+ will naturally favor high-damage shells like Gragu and Smert more than a first-playthrough shell tier list, which tends to reward consistency and survivability. When comparing rankings, always check what content scope the author covers — an NG+ shell tier list and a first-run shell tier list serve fundamentally different audiences.

Seal assumptions. The 4 Seals (Guard, Harden, Parry, Gloomslayer) dramatically change how each shell performs, yet many shell tier list creators test with only one or two Seal loadouts. Our ranking evaluates each shell across multiple Seal configurations where possible. When you read a shell tier list, check whether the author specifies which Seal each shell was tested with — a ranking that doesn't disclose Seal context is giving you an incomplete picture. A comprehensive shell tier list should at minimum test each shell with two different Seals, but most skip this step entirely.

Skill-level weighting. The most significant source of disagreement between any two shell tier list rankings is the assumed player skill level. A shell tier list written for veteran players will rank Sariel and Smert higher because those shells reward precise execution. A shell tier list aimed at newer players will rank Tiel and Eredrim higher because they offer more forgiving margins. Our ranking aims for the middle ground — we note each shell's skill floor and ceiling so you can adjust your personal shell tier list ranking based on your own mechanical comfort.

Version timing. The game launched with significant balance issues that Hotfix 2.0 and Balance Patch 1 addressed in August 2026. Any shell tier list published before these patches will show outdated tier placements. This ranking was verified against Hotfix 2.0 + Balance Patch 1, which is why our rankings may differ from older shell tier list results you've seen elsewhere. Always check the version tag on any shell tier list before trusting its conclusions — an outdated ranking is worse than no ranking at all if it leads you to pick a shell based on pre-patch balance.

Testing methodology. Some shell tier lists rely on community sentiment and forum polls, while others — like this ranking — cross-reference multiple sources and test in-game. A data-driven shell tier list will produce different results than a popularity-based one. Neither approach is wrong, but the methodology matters when you're deciding which Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list to trust for your own build decisions. A shell tier list that blends both data and playtesting tends to produce the most reliable rankings for the broadest audience.

The bottom line: no single shell tier list is authoritative. The value of any ranking comes from understanding the reasoning behind each placement, not from copying the tiers blindly. Our ranking gives you that reasoning — the rest is up to how you play. Whether this shell tier list ends up matching your experience or not, the framework it provides will help you evaluate every other shell tier list you encounter. A ranking is a starting point, not an endpoint — and this page is designed to be the best starting point you'll find for Mortal Shell 2.

Every shell in detail

Expand any shell for its unlock route, abilities, talents, strengths, weaknesses and best weapon pairings. This section is where this section goes deep on each individual shell — the kind of detail that turns a basic shell tier list into a genuinely useful resource. Every shell tier list should provide this level of granularity, but many stop at a single-sentence summary. Our Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list includes full breakdowns because the tier label alone doesn't tell you how a shell actually feels to play. A shell tier list that only gives letter grades without explanation isn't worth bookmarking — this page aims to be the one you save and return to.

The eight shells ranked on this Mortal Shell 2 tier page are: Tiel (S), Genessa (S), Eredrim (A), Smert (A), Proxima (A), Sariel (A), Lazlo (B), and Gragu (B). Click any card below to see why this shell tier list placed each shell where it did. If you're building your own personal shell tier list, these detail cards give you the information needed to adjust tiers based on your preferred playstyle. Every shell tier list reader will find at least one surprise in these cards — a good ranking is only useful when it challenges your assumptions, and this Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list is designed to do exactly that.

These detailed shell breakdowns represent the core analytical value of this ranking. While the tier labels above give you a quick shell tier list overview, the cards below each shell explain the why behind the placements. Many players find that reading the full details changes which shell they'd pick compared to just looking at a shell tier list's letter grades. That's exactly the outcome a good shell tier list should produce — informed decisions, not blind tier adherence. If you take one thing away from this page, let it be that every placement has context behind it, and the context here is always available for you to inspect.

The Seal system (defense), in brief

Mortal Shell 2 replaces the first game's single Harden mechanic with 4 Seals — Guard, Harden, Parry and Gloomslayer. Only one is equipped at a time and switching is free. Red (unblockable) attacks can only be dodged. Understanding the Seal system is essential to interpreting any shell tier list correctly, because a shell's tier placement on this shell tier list can shift dramatically depending on which Seal you run. This ranking factors in Seal versatility — shells that perform well across multiple Seal loadouts rank higher on our ranking than shells that are only effective with one specific Seal configuration. A shell tier list that ignores Seal interaction is giving you an incomplete picture, which is why this page dedicates an entire section to Seals alongside the standard shell tier list rankings.

The 4 Seals interact differently with each shell's stat profile, which is why a comprehensive shell tier list needs to account for Seal pairing. Our ranking evaluates each shell's performance across the available Seal options, giving you a more nuanced view than one that tests with a single default Seal. When comparing this ranking to other rankings, check whether the competing shell tier list specifies which Seal each shell was evaluated with — a ranking that ignores Seal context is giving you an incomplete picture. A shell tier list that accounts for Seal pairing will produce different results than one that doesn't — and the difference can be as large as a full tier for shells like Sariel and Lazlo.

For this Mortal Shell 2 shell tier list, Seal versatility is a deliberate ranking factor. A shell that performs well with three or four Seals ranks higher on this shell tier list than a shell that only shines with one specific Seal. Most shell tier lists don't measure this dimension at all, which is one reason our rankings sometimes diverge from the consensus. If you have a preferred Seal, your personal shell tier list may shift accordingly — and that's fine. A shell tier list should be a starting point, not a straitjacket, and this ranking provides the Seal data you need to build your own from the same evidence.

SealDefenseTiming windowBreak damageSafety netFailureWhere to get

Vatra's Seal Harden (petrify) / Perfect Harden Forgiving (instant press, frame-1 invulnerability) Perfect: small Yes — absorbs any single hit regardless of damage Absorb then cooldown (8-16s depending on Shell) Defeat the Tar Golem in Disciple's Grotto
Infinite Seal Parry (block-counter) Tightest (no hold; precise single press, 8-16 active frames) ~3× Perfect Guard/Harden None — a failed Parry takes full damage Full damage, no Guard fallback Complete Sester Genessa's tutorial in Marrow Keep

Harden cooldowns are only publicly documented for 4 shells (Harros 12s→9s, Tiel 16s→12s, Eredrim 14s→10s, Solomon 10s→7s); the rest pending in-game testing.

The Seal table above is a key reference for this page. While the tier placements are based on overall performance, your personal shell tier list might look different once you factor in your preferred Seal. A shell tier list that accounts for Seal synergy — like this ranking — gives you a more accurate picture of each shell's true potential than a ranking that evaluates shells in isolation. When you're ready to apply this shell tier list to a real build, the Seal pairing notes here will help you make the most of whatever shell tier list ranking you end up following.

FAQ

Below are the most common questions players have about this Mortal Shell 2 ranking and about shell tier lists in general. If you're new to these kinds of comparisons, this FAQ section will help you understand how to read and use any shell tier list you encounter. A well-constructed shell tier list FAQ — like the one on this page — addresses the questions that actually matter when you're choosing a shell. This section is itself a form of education — it teaches you the questions to ask of any shell tier list, not just this one.

What is the best shell in Mortal Shell 2?

For most players Tiel (S) — highest mobility, best early carry, and no boss required to unlock. For the highest DPS ceiling, Genessa; for pure survivability, Sariel in practiced hands.

What shell should beginners start with?

Proxima or Eredrim. Proxima unlocks without a boss fight, has a zero-effort mitigation passive (Grafted Armor) and crowd control; Eredrim has the second-highest HP pool and the most forgiving boss learning curve.

How many shells are in Mortal Shell 2?

Eight: Tiel, Eredrim, Genessa, Smert, Proxima, Sariel, Lazlo and Gragu, plus the prologue shell Harros.

Can you switch shells in Mortal Shell 2?

Yes — found shells can be re-entered at their remains (or via unlock items later). Switching Seals is free and instant.

Does HP matter more than Resolve?

They trade off: high-HP shells generate Resolve slowly. With no Stamina in the game, the two real resources are Durability (HP) and Resolve.

Will this tier list change after future patches?

Yes. The ranking was built on Hotfix 2.0 and Balance Patch 1 and re-verified twice since: the Adaptive Difficulty update buffed Sariel's abilities without changing placements, and Hotfix 1.000.011 (Sept 24) shipped bug fixes only — no shell balance changes, no placement changes. When a future balance patch shifts the meta, we retest all eight shells and update placements. Check the version badge at the top of the page — if it does not match your current game version, the rankings may be outdated.

Should I pick the highest-tier shell as a beginner?

Not necessarily. Tiel (S tier) has the highest damage ceiling but extremely low Durability — one or two mistakes kill you. Proxima (A tier) or Eredrim (A tier) are more forgiving for first-time players. The tier labels reflect overall effectiveness, not beginner-friendliness. Each shell card in the detail section notes its skill floor.

How many shells can I fully bond in one playthrough?

Approximately three. Glimpse spent to unlock shells is permanent, so choose your unlocks carefully. The beginner tips page has a recommended unlock order that maximizes your options across the first and second playthroughs.

Does Seal choice change the tier rankings?

Significantly. A shell that is A tier with Guard might be S tier with Parry in the hands of a skilled player. This ranking factors in Seal versatility — shells that perform well across multiple Seals rank higher. Check the Seal section on this page for per-Seal pairing notes.

Does Adaptive Difficulty change the tier list?

No. Adaptive Difficulty is an experimental, opt-in feature that ships off by default, and this tier list is evaluated with the game in its default state — rankings and placements are unchanged by the update that introduced it. Since the setting only applies if you turn it on yourself, it does not affect how the eight shells compare for the way most people play. For the full breakdown of the mechanic, see our Mortal Shell 2 Adaptive Difficulty guide.

Where does this tier list's data come from?

We cross-referenced six independent launch-period tier lists (KeenGamer, TreyExGaming, allthings.how, GamesHorizon, and others) plus community-reported in-game testing. Shells are placed where the majority of sources agree, with explicit notes on contested placements like Gragu and Sariel.
